G-Free Foodie Mommies

Meet the G-Free Foodie Mommies!  They’re all in different stages of  Gluten Free parenting.  We hope their stories can help, inspire, or entertain you.

Erin: Erin lives in Fresno, California with her husband and two very active children. Her son Rowan is 6 and her daughter Kaelyn is 4 going on 34.  Their gluten free journey began when Rowan was diagnosed with Celiac in the early spring of ’08 when he was 3 years old. The diagnosis was a welcome answer after months of bellyaches and “digestive issues” that sent Rowan home from preschool at least 3 times a week.  At the time of Rowan’s diagnosis it was suggested that both parents be tested as well, and surprise, surprise, it turned out Erin had the disease as well.  This diagnosis was not as welcome! To make the tri-fecta complete, Erin’s mom then also tested positive. Kaelyn has been tested twice so far and remains Celiac free for the time being.  Erin is excited about all of the new knowledge and gluten free products that have come about just in the past two and a half years.  She says, “There are so many more better tasting options than there were when we started living gluten free. Restaurants are becoming much more aware as well. There are new products coming out all the time and I am excited to see what the future will hold for the G-free world!”

Hilary: Hilary was raised in California’s Central Valley, but she and her husband currently live in McKinney, TX with their three crazy boys and entirely too many disobedient animals.  Her seven year old son, Ethan, was diagnosed with Celiac in April 2010.  So far, her other two children haven’t been tested but their pediatrician recommends that she do so within the next year.  Hilary’s father has CD, so she has a basic knowledge of “do’s and don’ts” but her parents tend to avoid foods that contain gluten, rather than hunting out suitable substitutions.  Hilary and her husband love to cook, so they enjoy trying out new G-Free recipes and are slowly starting to get a better understanding of what works well and what just doesn’t.  Hilary’s goal as a G-Free mommy is to try and keep Ethan’s life as normal as possible and to learn to make yummy G-Free substitutes for all of his favorite (gluten infested) foods.

Jennifer: Jennifer is a 28 year old married mother of two from Central California.  She & her husband Bryan have their hands full with two wonderful, active, busy and super funny children: a little boy, Logan, who’s four and a little girl, Mia, who’s 20 months old.  Jennifer has recently discovered that Logan has Celiac Disease, and Mia is an unknown.   Mr. Logan is a double-whammy, he’s also allergic to peanuts.

Jennifer’s mom was diagnosed with Celiac Disease about six years ago and her brother about a year ago.  She’s been tested and hasn’t been positive – yet.  Luckily, Jennifer has some guidance from her family for some help, but being celiac as an adult and celiac as a kid are two whole different things.  She says: “As an adult you know why you can’t eat certain things.  At four, it just sucks!”
